About Goldens
The Nature of Goldens
" The Golden Retriever is a happy, loving dog. Their tails wag all the time! They are happy to see you. They are happy to go out. They are happy to eat. They are happy to get in the
car. They are just plain happy! And they are REALLY happy when they have a tennis ball or piece of clothing in their mouth. They don't have a bad day! I think this is their most endearing characteristic."
Chris Miele, President
Golden Retriever Club of America
Why I Love Goldens
I truely believe Goldens think they are humans and want to be part of everything that we're doing. They each have their own personality which begins to show itself as early as
two weeks of age. My mom, a confirmed dog skeptic, was won over by them. You will be, too!
How Goldens Came to Be
There are several theories about the origins of the Golden Retriever. The most commonly accepted theory is that they began in Scotland on the estate of Lord Tweedmouth. In 1865, Lord Tweedmouth purchased a Russian Wavy-Coated Retriever from a circus in Brighton, England. He bred it to his now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Their four yellow puppies were the predecessors of the modern Golden Retriever.
In 1911, Golden Retrievers were given their own club and two years later were permitted to be registered.
